i just started rowing and quite enjoyed it, does it do anything for stomach muscles??

Any type of cardio is a good weight control technique. This exercise may tone the abs and leg muscles, but I doubt it will cause you to build muscle as your body weight does not really challenge your muscle enough to cause this. This machine as well as all the cardio machine will help you build up endurance. More endurance mean you wil be able to go for a longer period of time on the machine. About a one half hour on a machine is a sufficient amount of time to burn fat and calories.

Rowing machines are good, and I enjoy using the one in the gym I go to. I like it because when you use it you are using all the major muscular groups. Apparently you can burn up to 900 calories in just one hour session, but I guess this will depend on how fast you are rowing.

works the arms, shoulders and lateral muscles mostly

it does have some benefit for the stomach

if you want to really work your stomach muscles try "the plank". basically hold your body up in the press up position except resting on your elbows and forearms, with the fingers interlocked. Keep your bottom as low as possible and hold for a minute- repeat 3 times each day in the morning and evening.

Rowing is a great exercise for all round fitness but it does concentrate on the upper body (arms and shoulders) so you should also consider other exercises such as cycling and running to balance it out otherwise you might end up with chicken legs!
