Just by tuning into what they like... if you're gonna ask them to marry you you obviously know them quite well so this should be easy!
My ideal would be walking on the cliff tops (preferably St Agnes in Cornwall) with my partner and him just to surprise me by getting on bended knee (checking for dog poo first!) and asking me to marry him... oh the view and the romance of it all...... (hope he's reading this!!!!!)

about 2 weeks ago, i took my now fiance to Egypt, went for a walk on the beach after a romantic meal, the moon was full, the stars were out and we were the only people on the beach,
then she said my cue: "oh wow, this couldn't be more perfect" so i thought id prove her wrong and asked her to marry me.
she said it was the best way i could have done it for her, but each woman is differant and wants differant things (dont we know it!) check out the questions ive asked for more answers on this.

My husband paraglides so we went on a paragliding holiday with a group of people to France. He had the ring in his pocket and i had to film his landing from the ground. So he jumped from a mountain, landed at my feet and proposed, all while I was filming it. It was very romantic, and special and I was so surprised

Taking the girlfriend to Siclily this weekend to propose as she has always wanted to go there, and will hopefully find a nice restaurant to do the deed.
If she says no then she will be 'swimming with the fishes!'

My friends husband tied the ring to their dogs collar and when she came home she pet the dog and saw something dangling from the collar and them her husband handed her a card and when she opened it the card said mommy will you marry daddy love the dogs name. I thought it was sweet. Or you could just surprise her in a romantic way.
