A diploma indicates completion of high school course work.
An associate's degree indicates completion of a 2-year (usually technical) degree, most likely at a community college.
A bachelor's degree indicates completion of a 4-year college/university coursework.
A master's degree is earned after the bachelor's, and can last anywhere from 1-3 years depending on the school and major. You can either study what you studied as an undergrad, or choose a new area to study for a master's.
PhD and Doctoral degrees are the advanced degrees earned by doctors, lawyers, and other high-ranking professionals. These advanced programs are tailored directly to the field they plan to work in.

A diploma is what you get from High School and some trade or vocational schools. Associates you get from 2-year college programs. Bachelors are after 4 years of college. A Masters you get by first obtaining a Bachelor's then going through another 2 year program. And a Doctorate is usually another 2 years after that.

A diploma is just a piece of paper indicating that you finished some course. It could be high school, or trade school, or almost anything. An associate's degree usually takes two years to complete. It is usually concentrated in one subject, with very little coursework outside that subject area. A bachelor's degree involves a broader selection of coursework, and takes 4 years, most of the time. A master's degree comes after you have completed a bachelor's degree, and involves more specialization in a particular subject. Then comes a PhD, if you REALLY want to become specialized (an expert, actually) in one aspect of your particular field of study.
Example: You go to a four-year college and major in Biology. You will get a bachelor's degree in Science/BIology. Then you go on to graduate school for another 2 or 3 years and get a Master's Degree in Botany (which is a branch of biology) THEN you go for another 3 or 4 years and study a particular family of plants, and get your PhD, after doing individual, specialized research on the Pine Tree (or whatever).

Diploma - Finished general studies in high school with passing grades
Associate - Finished a two year course of study in a particular field in college (Usually technical) with passing grades
Bachelor - Finished a four year course of study in a particular area plus general studies with passing grades
Masters - Finished an Additional Two to Three years past a Bachelors in a specific area or a course and completed a Masters Thesis and or Tests
PhD Finished Two more years past a Masters in a Highly Specific area, published a Doctoral dissertation that included independent research.
The higher the degree the more specific your education becomes. Lets say you graduated from High school, you went to a two year college for a degree in electronics, your Bachelors might be in electronic engineering, your Masters could be in Electronic Engineering Management and your Phd might be in Electronic Engineering Management Theory, developing your own.

The difference is the different stages of learning. Diploma being the first stage, associate a little higher learning than in the diploma stage, bachelor is still higher learning than the associates. The content you learn in any subject differs in asceding order over diploma, associate, bachelor, or any other higher degree. With each stage of learning one would have acquired knowledge set by the academic authorities for that particular stage.
