I think once Dr. Atkins died from some sort of heart problem the diet slowly decreased in popularity. It not a fun one to be on I have a friend on it. It's the one where all carbs are bad and so you eat hamburgers without the bun and stuff like that. Whatever it was most people agree carbs are necessary for your well being so it lost its appeal. Like Jack at Jack in the Box fast food says 'bread is back'!!

The "Atkins" version of low-carb is "out" because it seemed to encourage the consumption of fatty foods and paid no heed to calorie reduction. In my opinion, it really just encouraged low-carb diet and not high-fat.

The low-carb "fad" has, however, persisted in different forms. The new fad diet is South Beach, although it's no longer a raging fad, and this diet also calls for reduced carbs. Even the US Dept of Agriculture's dietary guidelines http://www.mypyramid.gov/guidelines/index.html has become modified, now specifically calling for whole grains, and reduced amounts. With little fanfare and no admission that low-carb is great, studies http://cardiology.jwatch.org/cgi/content/full/2003/808/1?ijkey=84e4AMVA26ruU&keytype=ref&siteid=jnlwatch are popping up that show some merit to low-carb diets.

It's not as popular. since people are realizing once you stop it you gain all your weight back and it has been said Dr. Atkins died form complications caused by his own diet. But like everything else people are still looking for the quick fix. which never works on a permanent basis and does more harm than good in the long run
