it depends on the size, type, and quality. The scallops you see on TV the most are sea scallpos, which are much larger. There are also bay scallops available, which are generally the size of a finger tip. Sea scallops are sized, liked shrimp, by how many a pound contains (20/30,30/40). To compare, there might be 150 bay scallops in a pound. U-10's are generally considered the best, and approximately 10 are in a pound. The cost varies greatly by your location. Cheaper in the new england region, expensive in the midwest. Make sure they are fresh.

If you are in GB scallops come in 2 sorts - King scallops (the most expensive) and Queen scallops (or queenies). They are both delicious when fresh. Try to buy them fresh not frozen and ones hand picked by divers from the sea bed are the most ecologically sound. I live in a Scottish fishing town where scallops are the main catch. They are dredged from the sea bed with massive rakes dragged by the trawlers, destroying huge areas of the sea floor. In our local fish shop they are about 50p each.

Jumbo scallops are running $10 a pound for a 5 pound bag here. I'm not sure if those are U-10's or just large sea scallops. If you want to just try them out, bay scallops are cheaper and sweeter and easier to find. The bigger they get, the more bitter they get.

You don't buy them by the piece, you buy them by weight. And the price is going to vary a lot, depending on where you live, what type of scallops you buy, and the time of year. So go back to the supermarket where you saw them, and see what the price is. Or go to the store's website and search.

roughly speaking they are between 80p and just over a pound

if you go to borough market in london bridge, you can get them for a quid each and you can guarantee that they have caught that morning.

and you will find numerous other foodie treats there too. its great there.
