Just talk to the cat, it doesn't much matter what you say. compliment the cat, tell him he's a good boy (hopefully he is). Tell him how handsome he is, how smart. Talk to him about what your cooking for dinner, how you like your job, what the neighbors are doing, what ever. It doesn't really matter as long as you are talking nice to the cat, paying attention to him, giving him strokes. However a conversation implies a response. Don't expect much of one past purrpurrpurr or meooow.

I sit down with my cat on a regular basis just to remind him that he is, in fact, a cat. He seems to think he's a person.

Use words familiar to the cat such as your cats name and the word kitty. Use a soft and pleasant tone and make sure to make eye contact and physical contact (petting) with the cat. This will let the cat know how important he/she is and will make your cat feel happy and loved.

Animal may appear to respond to your verbal commands but what they are actually doing is recognizing the pattern of the sound. They have ZERO understanding of the actual content....
So it is impossible to carry on a conversation with them.
Basically, you can say to them anything you want, and you can interpret the response to anything you want....

Well, I don't know if my cat understands, but every time he meows at me, I say something like "Is that so?" or "Oh, I'm great, how are you?"
It's just like talking to a baby. They probably don't understand, but it's funny to pretend they do.

If you actually think you can carry on a conversation with your cat, I don't think it matters what you say.

You can say anything to him. He has no idea what you're saying, but can tell how you're saying it, but the tone of your voice. He's also nonjudgmental, which is nice, because that means you can tell him anything and he won't judge you (or be able to tell anyone else). If you want to try and get him to meow back, you can try to mimic the tone of his meow, and see if he responds.

Gee, I think all the answers so far are great, but too bad we can't do the same with senior cicitizens that need some attention.
