It's symbolic. In battle, the flag should always be visible to the troops as an inspiration, and an indication of where the front line is. If the flag bearer goes down, someone else immediately picks up the flag and carries it high. So we carry that over into all displays of the flag.

In the "old style" war days, there would be a flag bearer that would carry the flag and was usually up in front of a battle charge.
If the flag bearer was killed, another man would take the flag from his fallen comrade before the flag hit the ground and would become the new flag bearer. (At least, that' the traditional story).
Also, in the olden days, when an army would capture a fort or a hill from its enemy, the officer in charge would take down the enemy flag and throw it to the ground, then raise the flag of his own army. So, traditionally, a flag on the ground means defeat. But it is also a form of respect. Once a flag gets dirty, it is supposed to be destroyed.

Not only American flag should not touch the ground.
Flag, stands for the nations' pasts, histories, griefs and happy times. You cannot insult to any flag in any way. I'm Turkish and our great leader Kemal, Mustafa's thoughts about flags were significant. According to him, we cannot insult any flag by firing it up, stepping onto it etc.
In WW1 times, we had defeated Greece several times and their flag were on the warfield. Kemal Mustafa came and took the Greek flag then respected greek leader of time in a noble way.
I'm not trying to be rascist here, if I was born as an American person, I would act like this. No difference.
Respecting and protecting flags cannot be counted as being rascist. It symbolizes nations, humanity, cultural differencies between people, peace and other white subjects.
Let's take it friendly and respect all the flags of our World.
Long live America,
Long live United Kingdom,
Long live Rep. of Turkey,
Long live Israel,
Long live Palestine and all the nations in the world.

As the symbol of our country, and our honor, Americans have held the belief that the flag should never touch the ground, never be desecrated in any way and when a flag is old and worn it is burned with ceremony. To touch the ground, to be dirtied or sullied is to say we are trampling the US under our feet. To wear it around your backside is to suggest you are sitting on our country. It is symbolic respect for our history, our country and those who died to establish it and preserve it.

when the flag is on the ground that equals giving up or defeat so it has to stay off the ground. its also representative of a living breathing missing or dead soldier. so laying it on the ground would be disrespectful

out of respect for the symbol of america, it shouldn't be left in the rain, or out at night either, it should also not be allowed to look dirty or ragged.....that flag represents the greatest nation that ever existed in the world and as a result should be displayed proudly and reverently
