Religion was conjured up in an attempt to explain the unexplainable and as a method for controlling the masses. It's time that we phase out religion and move toward more rational systems such as science and true democracy.

That goes with the whole idea that god was made in man’s image. But most discussion puts out the idea that man created the gods to explain the crazy happenings of the earth and nature. The volcano was erupting because so-and-so was angry and thus needed to be appeased. And while I do believe religion and faith need to be a part of human society, I also think it should stop being used as justification for the acts of man.

I think that part of it has an evolutionary cause: Human beings, as animals, align themselves in hierarchies, and the desire to have an "alpha male" (or female) keeps cropping up. God (or Goddess) can be seen as simply the ultimate alpha being, a projection of the human psyche onto the universe. Whether or not this projection has any reality of its own is a whole different subject.
