Use clippers with guards if you want it short. They range from 1/8" to 1" and some go longer. With the guard on, you can't cut it any shorter than that so it's almost impossible to mess up. Just remember to go longer at first, b/c you can always make it shorter. You might want to get help shaving your neck though. It can be done but is a little tricky.

First thing in order to cut your own hair is you need to buy a Wahl clipper set. The Wahl has color coded guards and make it nearly impossible in messing up short hair. The only trick is to start with a long guard and then work your way up to a shorter guard. It is always better to cut twice and find your length then to cut once and have it be to short. Next you will need two mirrors. If you could recruit help from a friend or family member it would be helpful. Originally, cut all your hair with the same guard all the way around. After you have accomplished that, use a shorter guard for the hair in the back of your head and up the sides. I usually cut my husbands with the shorter guard about 1 inch about the top of his ear. Go around your head and keep it even with your guide that you shaved from your side with the ears. Remember to take your time. Once you get aquainted with everything you will be surprised at how simple it really is. One more thing. An important trick to getting your top even is when you are cutting with the clippers, go back in forth making an "X" on the top of your head. This will make sure you get any stragglers and finish it off real nice. After all this is complete, find someone you trust to even out your neckline/collar. This is hard to do by yourself, but just about anyone (but you) can clean up your neckline/collar. I had a friend who did his own. He would take a tube sock and tie it around his head and that acted as his guide when it came to shaving his collar-line. Good luck and like I said before....recruit some help if you are able.

Military veteran here...Midhigh fade is the style of choice... Its easy. Learn when its not winter time for one, cause you can always shave it all off to a number 1. Just two mirrors. Handheld and on the wall. It is a bit difficult to get use to cutting with your non dominate hand in the hand held mirror cause you have to do things different. Depends on your hair style.... you want.. practice slowly... I have been cutting my hair for 4 years now..... only takes me about 10 minutes.

I have my hair real short. It seemed a waste of money paying a hairdresser so I bought some clippers and have cut my own hair for the last 12 years or so.

Actually , I used to do my own hair , but that's only because I have a short spikey pixie cut , and if I get it a bit uneven or too short in one area , it won't matter because I go for the messed up choppy look !

HAHA...I just cutted my hair just about 20 minutes ago all by myself :D
And it turned out pretty darn good for a beginner. But you really have to have skills (like me :D) and depends on how you're cutting your hair. If you're a guy (judging you by your avatar)...I don't think you should cut it by yourself because guys have shorter than girls....unless you have long hair?
But by judging by your avatar...you have short hair, so I wouldnt cut ti if i were you.

With two mirrors and good eyes. I've done it before several times, and it came out fine.

I have done it before. If your style is a spike style, then go for it.
