Actually, I would disagree: a "mug" is the thing we drink coffee from. I say it is a "Coffee mug" not a "Coffee cup."

Which illustrates a point: the same word can have different meanings to different people. A lot of times, it's a good idea to clarify the meaning of a word before you start to have a debate, but I think to try and over-define the language can sometimes create problems of tedium. Every word needs to have a basic definition, don't get me wrong, but how often in my day-to-day life do you think I correct people saying "It's not a coffee cup, it's a coffee mug?" How about all the people who use swear words incorrectly? My wife says she doesn't mind if people swear, just as long as she uses the nouns as nouns and the verbs as verbs and the adjectives as adjectives. Most people don't. They just throw the words in the sentence and you could have a complete sentence if you just pulled out the swear words.

Now, "God" has different meanings to different people. Primarily, it means whatever we worship with the highest esteem. Because what Christians, Muslims, and Jews worshiped with the highest esteem was the Omniscient, Omnipresent, Immortal, Uncreated first, "God" has also come to mean those things in casual conversation. Also, there are problems when it comes to translating from other languages: in Hebrew, the word for God is "Elohim," which is derived from "El," which means power. Basically, "Elohim" means the "most powerful," and so it was sometimes applied to men, in the sense of saying, "He's the most powerful man," etc. Instead, they'd say he's a god. In Greek, "Theos" came to basically mean any spirit that had power over the world, so you have it used that way, sometimes even in the New Testament. In Chinese, the word that is often translated "god" can in my opinion be translated better as "saint." I mean, Buddha was not omniscient, omnipresent, immortal, or uncreated, he wasn't a spirit, he didn't have any real power in the world, worship was not intrinsically due him, he was just a really smart guy. But it's not worth trying to correct everyone who has ever translated it as "god."

Over all, I think if you're going to debate theology, it's important to define the word "God" before you start. Some religions that's done for you so you don't need to worry about it, others not so much. Have some reason for the definition you choose, and choose a definition that is going to work well for your target audience or that you and the person you're debating with can agree on, but lay it all out first so you're not running in circles.
