It sounds like there is a bit of history there that your parents prefer to leave behind and your asking them to fill you in possibly makes them relive things they'd rather not bring back.
If you know what your ancestory is then simply search the net...you might however want to let your parents know that this is what you intend to do...if they have specific reasons for not sharing your heritage with you it's either cause they aren't proud of it or they are bothered by it for some reason.
Everyone should know who they are but in some cases that isn't possible...investigate what you can on your own but don't let it control or obsess you and certainly, don't allow yourself to attack or change your love for your parents all based on ancestory and what you might possibly learn about it.
Good luck

Tell them that you are proud to be an American, but you just want to know where they came from. You want to be proud of your heritage as well. If that does not work, try other relatives or just keep on asking.

Just tell them you are proud to be American but you are also proud of your parents heritage and you would like to know more about it.

The two are not incompatible. Ask your mom why she is reluctant to tell you anything. Is she ashamed of her background? Or is she worried you will not succeed if you remember your ancestral identity? Find out what the block is with her and tell her how important it is for you to know where you come from. Remind her that we are all immigrants in America and the best way for you to be able to go forward into your future is to know about your past.
