I am 28 and so is my partner. I am at uni fulltime and he is trying to make a living as an artist whilst signing on. I have waited five years for a sign of committment such as engagment ring and even asked him if we could move in together and I would pay the bilkls, but he said no, not until he makes money at his art, which could be 5 or 10 years, he has already tried for 9 years .Having children are not in our future also until he makes money. I suggested he gets a pt job, but he said he is never going to work again for anybody else. I qualify soon into a very good career and am looking at buying a house with no support, any advice??

He's stalling. If he can't commit to you after five years then maybe there's something other than his art going on. Don't waste your life on a guy who can't give you what you need. You'll regret wasting all those years with him.

D@mn, but you are thick as a plank. If he didn't offer to have and to hold until death do you part sometime before the three-year mark, he is never going to. You have two options - keep hoping until you are 64, or drop him now and start rebuilding your life.
Van Gough only sold one painting in his life, so every artist after him thinks that unpopularity is a mark of genius. For every Van Gough there are ten thousand "artists" who are not very good. After 9 years he should be selling accurate, workman-like, if un-inspired pictures of pretty things (golf courses, flowers, dogs, horses, cottages, sea scapes . . .) to people who don't know art but know what they like. If he can't do that, he is going to stay on the dole forever.
The chances of you two celebrating a 25th wedding anniversary do not look good.

Lay it all out in front of him. Show him what you are capable of, and tell him you want a partner that is ready to move onto the next step, and without money, and a steady income that proves difficult. Artzy people are strange, and he may not understand your need for consistancy, but maybe opening his eyes to your perspective will help.

If you've been together for 5 years and there's still no sign of commitment, it's most likely not going to happen. You need to decide if you would be happy for the rest of your life with things as they are with him. If not, then get out now and find someone who has his crap together and knows for sure that you're the one.

You might have to make a tough decision soon. For your bf in life you always work for somebody no matter what your profession is.
