Being 24 I am sure you are looking for a sporty, yet conservative car.
Look at the Impala (30MPG) The Cobalt (33MPG) G6
These are all good cars.
Ford Focus
If you are looking at SUV
Pontiac Torrent, Chevy Equinox, Ford Escape you wont need AWD or 4WD if your intention is moving out west soon.
Now for ny 2cents
My Hope is that you choose american. Please realize that for every 1% of market share the imports gain 27,000 americans risk loosing jobs. The Forign cars are assembled here to avoid paying taxes. Most (90+%) of the parts come from overseas. they have no tier 2 or tier 3 suppliers here localy. In order to strenghten our economy we need to be aware of all the things that are crippling it.

Another vote for Subaru. You've got a lot of options in that price range -- you can go practical with the small-SUV Forester (a tall wagon, lots of room for your stuff but still compact enough for easy city driving) or a Legacy Limited with leather and nice amenities if you want something a little more stylish. Or you can get the WRX and have a ton of power for outgunning taxicabs.
I've owned a 2004 WRX for a little over three years and 45,000 miles. Everything is wearing well and the car runs flawlessly, which is amazing considering the things I've done with this car -- racetrack time, autocross, rallycross, long-distance road rallies, ten-hour road trips, and the most damaging kind of driving you can do to an automobile: a three-minute drive to take my daughter to school on a cold morning.
It's pretty much weatherproof, too -- I live in the Pacific Northwest, where it rains a lot and snows a little. The all-wheel drive is incredible in low-traction situations; I've driven past Jeeps that were pointed the wrong way up a snow-covered embankment after sliding off the roadway, I've negotiated traffic circles during ice storms, and I've done a lot of other go-anywhere, do-anything sporting activities in mud, dirt, grass and gravel. Plus the heater and defroster are great -- with all the rain we get, you really need to be able to blast the windshield and clear the fog from the inside quickly.
Take a few minutes, look over the model selection and get some ideas from their Web site. They appear to have some good end-of-the-year sales promotions (low interest rates, cash-back on 2006 models, etc.) going on right now too, so the timing could be very good.

As far as reliability goes for 8 years, you can't beat a Honda or Toyota (Accord/Camry). You'll save money in the long run by having minimal car repairs/maintenance. As a bonus you'll also get very good gas mileage since gasoline isn't cheap and it'll only cost more either years from now. Plus, when it's time to sell a Honda/Toyota has one of the highest resale value. I live on the west coast and a 4x4 is not necessary, you'll only waste money in more frequent gas purchases.

8 years is a long time in the future. You might want to get some thing that would evolve with you and your life style. Considering the snow and traveling across country that you mention, look into a Ford Escape. My parents own one and Love it. It rides smooth, gets good mileage, has 4 wheel drive and has lots of room in the back. If you have children in the future there is room for them too. Rav 4's and other smaller SUV's are comparable to the Escape. And if your environmentally conscience, they do come in a hybrid, but those are a little more pricey. Good Luck with your search.

Becareful that you choose a car that passes California emissions standards. Some cars are made to pass federal emissions standards only and built with federal emissions equipment and if that is the case than the car you bought, that is suppose to last you 8 years would be worthless. I recommend Toyota and Lexus, Honda and Acura. It is your choice if you like any of their models. Good luck!

Look at the four wheel drive Subaru's, we have had ours for 7 years and no repairs outside of maintenance. No problems in our Chicago snow, economical with gas and we like it.

I would have to say for $27,000 go with an Audi A4/A6 Quattro. Good on gas, awd for snow, and VERY comfortable. Plus they look very nice.
