I think my friend might be a phony

As they say go by your gut instincts. If you ever feel like a 3rd wheel with a group of friends especially around one person then the other most likely that person is a phony or a fake.
One time I thought this person was a true friend and I told them that I felt like a 3rd wheel and they told me that I was just a selfish person and the other person just said I wasn't a 3rd wheel and I stayed friends with the other one and not with the one I told first that I felt like a 3rd person. A True friend will stick by you if you can tell them how you feel wether if it is good or bad.

Actually when someone is lying, they usually embellish things, they go on for too long and give too much detail. If they fidget or move about a lot, or keep touching their noses, or are unable to keep up eye contact, either they are uncomfortable or they are fibbing!
I find it's better just to be an honest person yourself and to expect the same of others. If people let you down, too bad, it's not the end of the world and it's their problem. We have to allow our friends the odd flaw you know.

I usuraly go by my gut feeling. It's a sickly hot feeling near my tummy that tells me this person is untrustworthy. Also If the person is overly nice to me thats another warning. Most Guidence Coucilars have been that way so I knew never to trust any of them.

a phoney in what way? you can always tell if someone's lying... if they dont have much to a story or somthing they are trying to tell you then I dont think its very probable that it happend.... If you feel like your friend is a phony then go with your first instinct... its 99.9 percent right

You dont. Never thrust people you have not known for at least months. In that time it will slip out from him/her sooner or later.
You should talk about general things only, before you get to know what they`re about.
the most Idiotic thing to do is to throw yourself into and be friend from the first days.

Give it time....phony people always show their true colors eventually. Until then, don't confide in this person or be buddy-buddy with them. They need to earn your trust before they can truly be your friend.

Well I know this one girl who is nice to everyone to their face. She smiles at everyone, makes jokes with everyone, and is very friendly with them. However, she has talked bad about a few of my friends behind their backs even though she acts like shes good friends with them to their faces. I don't hang around her much anymore, because I feel like if she can be two-faced to them, she can always do the same to me too.

Usually you just know...but I guess it's those who are super nice to your face but will stab you in the back in an instant if it will make them look good.
