I was on Tegretol since April 06 for "mood disorder"-serious up and down within hours. Then I seemed to get more and more depressed while taking it and until 2 weeks ago, my psychiatrist said I could off it and "see-how-things-go". There I started to have starring "frozen" spells, serious complex partial seizures, 2 days in a row and each episode lasted for hours! I was wondering if Tegretol in fact gave me the seizure or what had happened? No one has seizure in my family and I am 38 or am I lucky enough to get seizure NOW? Coincidence? Anyone has the same experience with Tegretol? Thanks everybody.

I weaned off meds slowly, under supervision of psych.Dr. When I was off, I was taking 800mg per day.

I took 900 mgs of Tegretol twice a day for almost a year. When the doctor said I could stop taking it and see how it went, I gave it a shot. Never in my life had I ever had a seizure, but the lack of medication in my system caused me to start having them. That's the downside of giving people anti-seizure medication for mood disorders. Your doctor should have weaned you off of them instead of letting you just stop. My doctor was repremanded by the state medical board after I was admitted for seizures and it was discovered what was causing them. Personally, I would seek out a new doctor for my treatment. As soon as I got a a new doctor who took care of adjusting the medication properly, and we cut it down safely instead of stopping cold turkey, mine stopped. Now I take another anti-seizure medication and I know the risks of what can happen if I stop taking them. Good luck to you.

I didn't see seizures as a side effect, but that doesn't mean you didn't have one because of it. I think you should have cut back even more slowly before getting off of them completely. 800 mg. is still a lot.
I've had some pretty off the wall side effects from medications, usually the rarest.
Were you taking additional medications with it, even over the counter meds?
I don't think it was a coincidence, you went off the medication too fast and had a couple seizures.
Could you have been addicted to it?

They turned me into a zombie for want of a better word. I took myself off of them. I had temporal lobe epilepsy so they said, but seem to have grown out of it.
