West Highland White Terriers are lovely dogs. They have great personalities, and they don't need too much exercise. (maybe half an hour walking twice a day, plus a quick pee-break morning and night).
I work from home and my little dog is really good company.
You can see his picture!

Pugs are small, quiet unless there is someone at the door or in our yard, and very affectionate. Ours rides in the car, plays in the water, fetches, sits, stays- also sleeps on the bed- loves kids, cats and other dogs. The only thing you have to watch is not to let a pug get too fat because they can have problems breathing with their flat faces if they are obese. A great sturdy little dog. They don't bite as a rule and like to sleep by your feet when you are busy. They are not hyper and don't require a ton of exercise. Hope this helps. Good Luck finding a doggie thats perfect for you!!

A Jack Russel makes a good pet, also a Spaniel [any breed]
They are both very loving animals.
Try your local animal shelter, they're usually inundated with small dogs because people get bored with small breeds quickly.

chihuahua, pug, toy poodle. I like chihuahuas better though because I have one and she is a great companion. Does not bark unless someone is at the door, she is playful and we chase each other around the house and she loves hide and seek. She is also trained to stay in her dog kennel when she is required and does not complain. They are a bit hard to train as far as going to the bathroom outside but they do eventually get it. If you have young kids ( less than 5) may not be a good idea because they are small dogs and somewhat delicate.

Dogs from the Bichon family are great and don't shed. Coton de Tulear, Bichon Frise, Havaneese, and Malteses are great dogs. There is also the option of West Highland White Terriers, Chihuauas, Yorshire Terriers, and Miniature Poodles are also options. Dashunds are awesome too!

Do you mean you WANT a small dog? Or, you are just after one? Minature dachshunds have no order don't shed much and are extremely loving.
Terriers on the other hand are loyal intelligent and very easy to train. Plus they are cute! Please don't buy one from a pet shop in MO. Most of those are born in puppy mills. Try a home born puppy.

I have a Shih-Tzu who is not big but not too small. He is about 15lbs. He is fairly quiet and enjoys being near me. For the most part, if you're working, he won't bother you. He just likes to be in the same room as you. He's very smart and is easily trained.
