Either provides accurate numbers.
Exceptions to the rule:
Avoid taking BP in an arm with an IV
DO NOT take a blood pressure in the arm on the same side that a woman has had a mastectomy.
If the woman is being treated for pre-eclampsia - she should be placed on her left side for 3-5 minutes, and then her pressure should be taken in her right arm.
There are other exceptions that require taking a BP in one arm or the other.

A blood pressure (BP) should be taken in both arms and the arm with the higher reading should be used for subsequent readings. If there is a significant disfference (say 30 points) between the 2 arms a physician will evaluate for underlying problems with the circulation. The proper technique of taking a BP is no longer truly taught in nursing or medical school and in fact most settings use automated machines. Medical studies have found that home BP readings are accurate and reproducible.
