It depends in what sense, -- if you NEVER cross the line, you will always go in "right circles", -- as left turns require turning and crossing over "white line", - plus there is also a white line on right side of the road on most state highways, (in most states).
The solid white line is an imaginary "fence" when it is the center divider of the highway, - to keep cars from "swapping headlights"! Crossing over the line at times - is acceptable, -however it has to be avoiding some hazzard, and always when nobody else is there! Such as avoiding a pederstrian or animal, (providing it is safe to do so - meaning no traffic on that side). If you "merrily travel from side to side" as a practice, you will get a visit from the "gumball salesman pretty fast". It is also poor driving technique, - as those behind, - and ahead of you don't really know what to expect next -(maybe you are drunk??). Or maybe you are "asleep at the wheel", - or maybe you are having a heart attack or something!

White lines should be respected as a yellow line. The dashed white lines can be crossed but with caution. Solid white lines should not be crossed at all.
yellow lines - opposing traffic
white lines - same direction traffic.

Did you read your drivers manual yet? If you can't answer this and you have a driver's license, you don't belong behind the wheel of a car!
