Its the training they get at convenience store boot camp. I've been there. Its tough. But a select few of those immigrating to this country are taken off the plane directly to Parris Island. There they are drilled by some of the best for over 6 months. When they come out, they are proud to wear the plastic name tag of clerk. I have been to the pinning ceremony and it is quite impressive. The few. The proud. The clerks.

I would imagine that the store clerks you have encountered are probably working long hours with very little pay. Most small stores pay only minimum wage and the employees have different schedules from week to week. Convenience stores are the only stores open 24/7 365, so some of the employees are working on holidays when the rest of us are spending time with our loved ones. You must also factor in that there are many times throughout the day that they have to deal with rude people who think that their time is worth more than anyone else's in the store, so while in line they stand there tapping their feet, and or huffing and puffing, as if one more minute will be the end of their time.
That being said, I believe that if you take a job in the service industry you should be polite, but not all people take their job seriously.

Hmm--What everyone else has said AND here's something else to consider: We all create our own reality. That is, a clerk may or may not be rude, WE on the other hand, have the option of allowing that interaction to rub us the wrong way, or we can just smile & shine 'em on, or we can be empathetic, or humorous, or a miriad of other reactions that will either improve the situation or not. And we CHOOSE what we make in & of our lives. Peace.

It all differs. I've had some rude and some really friendly. But mostly friendly. I mean people do have their days. But its also the other way around "why are customers so rude?"
It works both ways.
i work as a cashier and i always try to be friendly to every single person. Even the ones who b*tch at me for being "too slow" *i run about 5 different things at once!!*

Maybe you should shop at another store. That is like saying that all women are bimbos, just because you know a couple who are! Can you do 10 different things at the same time, smile at people who are complete jackass's, and make lame small talk with complete strangers? If not -- don't work in a convience store :)

Probably because they hate their jobs. They don't get paid very much then eventually they get to the point where they say "why am I working so damn hard for so little?" and cop an attitude. Not saying it's right, but I'm pretty sure that's the reason. Not everybody is like that, but I know what you're talking about.

customer service is only as good as the customer, most clerks are not rude they are just in defense mode because of all the rude customers. Try saying something nice please, thank you, smile you will be surprised at the response.

It could be that they get paid crappy wages, have a very unfulfillng job and dont want to be there. Not all of them are rude but ive come across quite a few in my time as well.
