Diamond lane, also known as HOV lane (high occupancy vehicle lane) is designed to allow vehicles with a lot of occupants or mass transit vehicles to move faster than regular traffic. Thus, it is only reserved for carpool and buses.

Some states allow drivers to "buy in" to HOV by paying a special annual fee and display a unique emblem. Other states allow ULEV vehicles such as hybrids and CNG vehicles to drive in the HOV lane if they apply for a special emblem and display that on their vehicles. Check with your state DMV for details on who can use the HOV lanes.
