The question is. What are some of the potential causes? His diet has not been changed. His activity level has not changed. He is as vocal as ever. Now, here is what I am hoping is a potential problem. I neglected to give him water all day yesterday until 10:00 or so last night. I get up this morning and there is like puddles. I was thinking he may have been dehydrating and then consumed so much water, that it was going through hime quicker than usual. Comments appreciated. Please lay off the "you are a bad owner" tab, because he is more than well taken care of. He just costed me $600.50 for an illness that has still not been diagnosed. The Doctor ruled out any virus he could think of. The thing that confused him was his "white blood cell count" was @ 24,000 when he was brought in. He should be @ around 10,000-12,000 I believe he said. AFTER the antibiotics the count actually went up to over 27,000. He is stumped. Bird is 3 years old. Any help's appreciated!

Sincerely, Concerned Owner

Well...stuff happens, & your water theory could be spot on. However, you could take a bit of the messy stuff to the doc to run a test on to make sure that theory is correct.

Generally speaking the elevated white blood cell count does point to an infection. Sometimes antibiotics can kill normal bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract contributing to runny poop. I'm curious as to whether the Vet did a CBC (complete Blood count) that would give a differential indicating if a virus or a bacterial infection is at hand. Antibiotics are for bacterial infections. There are probably no antivirals available for birds. Keep doing what you're doing and if it is a virus, it may have to take its course. The dehydration is a possibility but the WBC count is really too high. If he worsens, get a better vet.Not everyone graduated at the top of the class. Good luck and I hope everything goes well.

Have you tried going to your local pet store and getting your Grey some of the over the counter type meds for the Runny Poop?? Read the Medications there are some that are Specifically for that and the People that work at the store should be able to guide you in the right direction as to what should be the best as per their customers use. I know that You can also try giving him/her some Baby Food Sweet Potatoes for a Few Days with Pasta to See if that will help the digestive Tract. There are also alot of good ideas you may get from Bird Talk Magazine and you can access that online and see if someone else in the past has had the same problem and if they had any other suggestions. I hope this Helps.

I would probably wonder if the antibiotics that he's on aren't the suspect here...

Was his poop pretty solid to begin with? With Katie, my Greenwing, I swear to all that's Holy when she goes she GOES. I mean, it's a big splat that is HUGE, watery, runny and icky. But, she's still on bottle feeds, so that's what I'm attributing that to. With Rio, he fluctuates between really splatty and mildly splatty depending on what we eat that day. Pasta seems to make it more solid, while meats and soups tend to make it more loose.

You're not going to get any "you're a bad owner" crap from me. It's impressive that you even care about his poop.

Call your vet and ask what the side effects of the antibiotics are...I'm betting you'll find that's your culprit.
