He will resent you if you are honest. I probably would try to find a more indirect route of making him understand that his personal hygiene is severely lacking. Find a gentle way of telling him. My guess is that he is having emotional problems such as depression. This often causes a person to be careless about his/her cleanliness.
how about if you throw a hint like casually commenting that he didn't have time to take a shower this morning. Adding to it that when you are running late like that you have a problem with BO. Let him know it happens to you. Maybe he will put the pieces together and bathe. I hope so.

I used to work at a place where someone stank real bad. The boss noticed and left a large tin of deodorant on his desk. He took the hint.

I saw a solution on a TV show. You should buy a new cologne and spray it on yourself in front of him and make sure he notices. Hopefully, he'll ask you about it - offer him some. If he takes it, tell him he can have it because you have another bottle at home, but he has to promise you that he'll use it because it cost you money and you want to know that he appreciates it. I hope this works for you!

If he is a pal I don't know how this situation has been allowed to develop. My background was in the military and a few subtle asides used to work, like "F*cking hell, you minger, when are you going to take a shower ?" always seemed to work. Buddies are supposed to look after each other.

We have this problem in our office, one bloke smells so bad he stinks out the whole 7 rooms we have here, no matter how much you tell him though he doesn't seem to improve! However i bet your friend would appreciate you telling him, sure he'll be embrassed at first but if you smelt bad wouldn't you rather be told, i know i would!!! good luck!

You could mention what you do for daily hygiene to see what he says. At that point, you could suggest what you bath in, wear, etc. Good luck! I know how you feel. I used to have a friend who had VERY bad breath that you could smell even while her mouth was closed!

just tell him. some people have issues with showers but they are proper personal hygiene. if he doesn't want to take one than i don't really want to hang out. fact of the matter is you could get sick or catch something from your "fine friend," now how good would that make you feel

When he's near you just say 'Oh my god,is that you with the nose curdling, hell of a stink body odour' ?
It worked for me, but my mum was upset,as she thought she smelt of roses.
