Excel is a spreadtsheet program. Access is a database program used primarily to store very large databases and can sort them and aid you in searching. To give an example:
You own a business with 23,000 employees. You need to find out which employees, in a certain department, have a salary within a certain range AND have been employed since before a certain date. Access will sort the data meeting all of your criteria and provide you a list of the proper employees.

Microsoft Access is a program that works with databases. Microsoft Excel is a program which creates spreadsheets, which are functional elements of databases.
If you have a business with many customers, you would enter all of their information, addresses, sales, names, phone number, etc; into an Excel spreadsheet. You could then create a form in Access to create invoices and statements from the data on the spreadsheet.
Basically, Access organizes the data you enter into Excel and allows you to make forms and interfaces which will interpret the information and print it for distribution.

Microsoft Access is a relational database, and can provide the in depth data mining that may be required, a relational database is an asset to a business that may require more analysis of information that it has on customers and products. etc.....
Microsoft Excel is a powerful spreadsheet and also a powerful tool, but it's not relational although it is a database. It does provide some search capabilities, and pivot reports.
One could use either to create and maintain a list of say entertainment materials that you have. With a relational database one could quickly and easily sort by type of media, or location of media, or subject matter of media, or multiples of criteria with a predetermined control button.
although a spread sheet can do these it would be a tedious process.
hope that helps
