One of my friends is holding a Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow. While we were talking about this dinner two weeks ago, he mentioned that he had "smuggled" the turkey into the country when he got back from his vacation in the States in JULY. So all this time that frozen turkey has been sitting in his freezer. It's been FOUR MONTHS.

I'm having second thoughts about coming to this T-day dinner because of this turkey. I don't think it's safe to eat.

What are your opinions on this?

Sorry had to add more details. He took a direct flight from NJ to East Asia (which is like 15 hours). And no, he did not refrigerate nor put it in a freezer. He packed it in his luggage and buried it in his clothes.

Once he got here, it's a 2-hr trip from the airport to his home. Then that's the only time that he froze it again. It's been frozen since...until tomorrow, that is.

You didn't say where you are, or how he "smuggled" the turkey.

If the turkey started to thaw at all and was refrozen it is NOT safe to eat. If by some miracle he was inventive enough to keep it frozen during the smuggling process, it is okay. Meat can be frozen for several months without bacteria formation, but it may taste of "freezer burn" if it has been frozen a long time. ("Long" being longer than four months.)

If it were me, I'd ask my friend how he smuggled the turkey without mentioning it as a decisive factor in your eating part of it. If you have any doubts about whether it stayed frozen, don't eat any.

After several hours, if the persons who do eat it aren't sick and the meat has been refrigerated properly after serving, you could have leftovers.

As long as the turkey was always frozen it is no problem. I usually buy a couple turkeys around thanksgiving to use at other times of the year. They are cheeper now than later. I would worry more about freezer burn then it being unsafe. enjoy the bird and your thanksgiving with friends.

You are correct in thinking this turkey is not safe to eat. If the turkey was out of the freezer for 15 hours it MUST have partly defrosted and should not have been re-frozen. Play it safe, don't eat it!

If the turkey has been frozen without interruption, it is completely safe to eat. I would be worried more about where this person actually got the turkey from.

I don't know about that particular turkey, but as far as freezers are concerned if they can't keep food eatable for four months, then you can avoid buying them, they would be totally useless!!! Thank God they keep food fresh and eatable for much longer!!!! In my family we keep meat for one year. The attention must be put on the fact that you must cook the meat once you have defrosted it and NOT, I repeat NOT FREEZE IT A SECOND TIME.

Not to worry. It should last 9-12 months in the freezer. See below.

I have never heard of a child getting sick or dieing from eating their boogers(I'm sure at some point we have ALL eaten a booger or two) As disgusting as it is they say it can actually help build their immune system.

The turkey should be fine, as long as it's cooked thoroughly.
