I heard from an athletic trainer a while back that a method of quickly stopping a nose bleed is by strongly hitting the bottom of the person's (who's bleeding) heel with the bottom of your fist. She said something about the force traveling up the leg? Has anyone ever heard of this of tried it??

Not something I've ever heard of, not even sure how it could work - there's an awful lot of blood vessels between your foot and your nose. The only SAFE way to stop a nosebleed is to lean foreward NOT backward (choking hazard), pinch the nose just below the point where it meets the forehead for atleast 5 minutes, 10 is better. You can also put an icepack on the back of the neck which will help speed up the clotting and slow down the bleed. If using an icepack though, always put something between it and the skin so you don't cause damage to the skin. If after 10 minutes the bleeding hasn't substantially stopped or if it starts again - seek medical help. Also, try not to blow your nose for several hours after a nosebleed as it might start up again. NEVER stop a nosebleed if there has been an head injury though - let it bleed otherwise you can cause pressure on the brain which is potentially fatal.

Never heard of it at all! To stop a nose bleed all you have to do is to sit forward in a leaning position and pinch your nostrils for a few minutes (meanwhile breathe through your mouth). Do not blow your nose or pick it for another few hours. Simple as that ;)

Hope that helps

my mother taught me this trick as a young child and i have to say it has never let me down..it may just be a southern thing. she told me to hit the opposite heel of the bleeding nostril with the palm of your hand...and voila..it stops...now as far as the pressure running up your leg or whatever...i dont know anything about that...i have tried to do research to see why it works but everything i had read says science, health and other professionals simply cant explain why people have success with this trick so dont feel bad! its not rubbish or an ole wise tale...if you do enough research you will find out thousands and thousands of people including myself use this trick and will be passing it down the info to my kids.

nonsense. direct pressure for 5 minutes by pinching, head tipped forward, not back. can add ice to back of neck.

its the actual stress you positioned on your physique... it only burst between the small blood vessels on your nostril... you are able to the two anticipate it to heal by utilising itself or circulate to the healthcare expert and get it lazered.
