The original idea was to inform emergency services in the event of an accident to search in AND around the vehicle involved for a baby (it may have been thrown out of a car for example)

It has nothing whatsoever to do with alerting the emergency services as to the possibility of a small child being on board at the time of the accident.
These signs are left on even when children are not on board .Therefore potential life saving time could be wasted by the emergency services searching for the child.
These signs are NOT endorsed by the emergency services!
At best they could encourage a following driver to think about his aggressive behaviour.
At worst , some proud parent is flaunting their fertility.

It's to alert emergency services to look for a baby/small child in an accident in case they've been thrown from the car and the adults involved are unable to communicate that a child was on board.

The emergency services answer is the real one, some Vicar devised the idea, an alternate reson is that someone driving a car with infants / baby on board may be easily distracted by whats happening inside the car, so you could apply a little more caution.

Now there is one to have a gripe approximately.;-)))

They tend to be fitted by men, who like to demonstrate to the world that they don't fire blanks.
As for deciding which car to hit in an accident, if that's the reason for the "Baby on Board," "Little person onboard" or any other bloody silly sign, then its pure ageism, and therefore politically incorrect.
:)

Apparently it was originally intended so in case of an accident the emergency services would know to look for a child.
However, if the adults in the car are so badly injured I doubt whether a pocksy little sign would remain in the window.
I think people now use it to prove their fertility or to justify why they have bought such a crap car, like a Citroen Picasso.

They are of no use whatsoever, they are in the same class as 'caution show dogs/cats in transit'. It's just some thing to show off - no one is in the slightest bit interested, except of course for the people who make the signs!

If they have a accident they know to look for a baby as well because they could fall behind a seat. "Out of sight, out of mind"
