I’m confused about a girl at work. I was assigned to sit next to a girl at a new job 3 weeks ago. For 2 weeks, I didn’t say much to her. I’m shy that way, but last Friday, she got me to open up and we talked for 2 hours. The following Monday, we were moved to another room and were no longer seated next to each other. This is where things confuse me. I let her borrow my CD player and I bought her a packet of gum. I also made her a friendship bracelet. She said “Thank You”, but I don’t know what to believe as when she moved to a new desk and later left for the day, she left the bracelet on her old desk. She doesn’t talk to me anymore, unless I say something first, and just walks by me most of the time without even looking. I asked her if I did something wrong and if she’s ignoring me. She claims everything is fine and it’s just that she’s trying to focus on her work. She also looks tired, but she talks to other people. What’s the deal?

it isn't what you think that it was. perhaps she was just being friendly and opened you up for the purpose of feeling her way around the office, people tend to do that either when they're new on the job and aren't sure what the office politics are there or when they're more seasoned and want to ensure that the newer person isn't any type of a threat or will give them any problems. you can never really trust a relationship with someone who has been at that same job for years without first seeing how things work outside of the office first.

the fact that she says that she is focused on her work either means that she doesn't see what the advantage to the friendship would be for her or she feels that the friendship would cause her issues on the job later on. what type of job is this anyway? because if it's an office job or a call center or something i would just keep it moving, yet keep that door open just in case you need that friendship in the future. you can never tell ...

This is just an observation and I could be totally wrong. But perhaps she's experiencing the affects of sexual harrassment on the job. The best thing is to be observant. And let her know that you'd like to be her friend. And except it if she doesn't want to be friends. But remember a real friend is a friend wanted or not. Give her space without animosity.

I think I wouldn't waste my time on her, doesn't sound like she even wants to be friends. Did you get your CD Player back? If not I would tell her you want it, and forget her. Sorry you just don't treat someone that way, even if you got a lot of work to do. I think she is just using you, and got what she wants.
