I have bare light bulbs fitted on the walls. It looks like I can buy shades that are just screwed on between the bulb and its base since there are no drill marks on the walls and a piece comes off that seems to leave space for a shade. There is no name or make on the lights and I can't find anything on the internet. I wonder if anyone has anything similar in their homes and could help?

I'm not saying they don't exist, but I haven't seen anything quite like you are describing. Most bulb fixtures that are designed for adding an after market shade already have a frame attached to the fixture that goes around the light bulb. You can get shades that clasp to the bulb itself not the fixture. They have a spring tension wire frame that slips on to the bulb directly. You can find these in many stores like K-Mart, Target, Sears, Home Depot, etc. They are pretty basic and design choices and colors tend to be limited.

As others have suggested a pilot hole will make the project go better and faster. The tip should fit the screw as well. A loosely fit tip will cause problems too. Don't force the screw into the wood but let it go in at it's own speed and just keep up pressure so the driver tip does not jump out of the screw head.

I wouldn't trust the spring loaded ones on a horizontal light bulb. If it is your house, I would look into some sconces (sp?) at a home improvement store. Installation is pretty easy, they would mount to the box your current light bulb base is attached to, probably.
