We need to stop being so simple-minded regarding spiritual realities.
There is more than this Earth. Hell and demons, and Heaven and angels.
Creation is full of Life!
What the shamans called evil spirits, were often entities that help our world to
exist, called elementals. Some "evil" spirits are lost souls, who don't
realize they have lost the body, and they hang around and bug people who
are more sensitive to them.
Demon possession is rare. But after I learned that a drunken "black-out"
is a temporary possesssion by a lost soul. Trying to "get off" on our
buzz. I got a handle on it!

WHAT IS DEMON POSSESSION

To understand Possession we must first understand what is a demon and what it is that they want. It is only then that we can truly says that that person is demon possess. The movie and TV film we saw is an exageration of the facts. Truly they are strong in nature and utterring blasphemous words as my pastor describe it. but majority of the possession is the reverse of it.

The bible gives only slight glimpses in to what is a demon. We know that they are disembodied spirits. They do not have a body. We know this from Jesus' statement that when a demon leaves a person he goes out into the wilderness. In the wilderness he does not find another to inhabit so he takes with him a number of demons stronger than himself and they re-enter the man only to make his condition worse than before. This is why after deliverance it is so important to close the door of entry by understanding how it was opened in the first place and teaching the person how to avoid reopening the door.

A disembodied spirit is limited in what he can do in the physical realm. Without a body he is only able to simply exist. If a demon is able to co-inhabit a person then the demon can use that person's body to perform its' bidding. The demon, once it has access to the person's body, has to work with or against the person in order to gain control of the person's actions. Even under the most intense "possession" situations there is not 100% control. The person can exert his/her will and control him/herself. The examples shown in the movies are not factual. Demons thrive on ignorance and passivity. We believe God allows a part of the person to remain to allow the person to choose to serve God or not. He always makes a way of "escape".

How does a demon enter a person? What allows a demon to enter one person and not another? I will answer this with one word: Sin. Sin is what opens the door to demon co-habitation. All sin opens the door to demon co-habitation. All sin does not open the door equally. Some sin only opens the door slightly while other sin opens the door wide. (such as involvement with the occult)

As I mentioned before there are different levels of demonic activity in a person's life. I will list them as follows:

1. Demonic Co-habitation
2. Demonic Oppression
3. Demonic Obsession
4. Demonic Temptation
5. Demonic Co-habitation

Demonic Co-habitation is what most would consider to be demon possession. The demons in the person's life have managed to gain entrance into the body, the soul, and/or the spirit of the person. If the person is born again then the demon is restricted from the spirit because the Holy Spirit of God dwells there and the spirit has been redeemed unto God. Demon's use doorways to enter into a person. Co-habitation is the goal of all demons who desire to influence a person. It is at this level that they can actually take over control of body functions. People who are co-inhabited will have periods of time in which they "loose time". What happens is that the demons pull the person into unconsciousness while they use the person's body for their own desires. The person is not conscious when this occurs. They have no recollection of what occurred while the demon was in control. The person can prevent the demons from taking control but they have to exert conscious effort to resist the demon's attempts to gain control. Those who are passive in nature will have great difficulty in resisting. Remember... demons feed off of passivity and ignorance.

It is with Co-habitation that demons reside in Strongholds. What is a Stronghold? Picture a mid-evil kingdom. The picture you imagine is that of a land of little hamlets and villages. At the center of the kingdom is a large mountain with a large castle at its' precept. It dominates the landscape. From the top of the mountain the stronghold rules the kingdom. Those who control the stronghold control the kingdom. Demons who co-inhabit a person reside in Strongholds. The Strongholds will vary in strength and type. The Doorway which was opened becomes the Stronghold which will prevent the demon from leaving. Demons cannot be expelled permanently until the Stronghold which is present is confessed, rejected, and brought under the blood of Jesus Christ for cleansing. A deliverance minister who expels demons without having the person deal with the strongholds is doing the person a great disservice. The demons will simply reenter with others who are stronger as soon as the deliverance minister leaves. To effectively remove the demons who are co-inhabiting a person you have to remove the strongholds first. Tear down the walls of the strong hold and then you can plunder the city and people which reside within its' walls.

Demonic Oppression

If Co-Habitation is where demons are in the house then Demonic Oppression is where demons are sitting on the ledge of an open window. The picture here is one in which the demons have access to the person without restrictions outside of physically controlling the person. The demons cannot take control of the person and manipulate the body functions of the person. The demon has a limited doorway open to him. He can manifest in various ways in the person's life. Demons who have legal right to oppress can cause the person to hear things, see things, smell things. The demon can try to manipulate the thought life to the point that they are almost controlling the person's thoughts. They can manipulate the dream life and certainly cause night terrors. The saturation of fear is certainly one of the main goals a demon in this situation will attempt to manifest. The demon also has unlimited access in the person to tempt them to sin. Whether it be alcoholism, drug abuse, habitual sin, immorality, witchcraft, and etc. the person is open game for the demon to manipulate and attempt to control indirectly. Demonic Oppression usually occurs where the person has not entered into sin which will allow Co-Inhabitation or where the person has not allowed Co-habitation by refusing to be passive.

Demonic Obsession

If Demonic Oppression is where a demon is sitting on the open window sill then Demonic Obsession is where the demon is out in the yard hurling rocks at the windows of the house. As you can probably see the various levels are measured by the access the demon has in the person's life. Demonic Obsession is more limited than Oppression. Obsession is usually isolated to one area of the person's life. An example of this may be alcoholism, lying, or masturbation. The person is able to function normally in every area of his/her life with the exception of this one area. It is possible for a person to be obsessed in more than one area. Typical to Obsession are bad habits. Behaviors that are difficult to break. With Obsession these behaviors are sinful in nature. What is meant is that biting finger nails is not demonic obsession. Habitual behavior, thoughts, or feelings which are sinful can usually be attributed to Demonic Obsession.

Demonic Temptation

If Demonic Obsession is where a demon is out in the yard throwing rocks at the windows of the house then Demonic Temptation is when you are walking down the side walk and a small dog attempts to latch onto your pants leg. You can leg the dog bite into your pants and drag him along. You can kick the dog off. Or you can run from the little dog to keep him from biting you. The picture is that you choose if the demon has access. All men, women, and children are exposed to this type of harassment. Even Jesus was exposed to this in the Wilderness by Satan himself. Satan tempted Him with three temptations. Jesus correctly resisted and overcame each of the three through the Word of God. This is usually the entrance point for the next three levels. If the demon is able to cause the person to fall into the temptation then the door is now open for the next three levels. If the person properly resists the temptation then the demon must look for another way to gain access.

How does the demons tempt? The mind is the battlefield. They send forth flaming arrows into your thoughts with the hope that you will accept their arrows as your thoughts. How? Demons have been deceiving men and women for thousands of years. They know that if they speak a thought into your mind then you will probably accept it as your own. Many of the nonbelievers thoughts come from demons. Most of the sinful thoughts of believers find their source from demons. The key is to identify those thoughts and reject them. Reject them as Jesus did. With the word of God. Out loud state, "I reject that thought of ___________________. That thought is not mine. Demon who put that thought in my mind I rebuke you in Jesus Name. Depart from me and don't return." Don't be embarrassed to speak out loud. Demons can't read your mind they can only put thoughts into it. That is why you must rebuked them out loud. If you do nothing then you allow them legal ground to continue to harass you and look for opportunity.

If you desire to resist the temptation of demons properly then you must realize that you have a choice to sin or not to sin. It is not the devil's fault if you sin. It is yours. You choose to sin. You bare the responsibility for your actions. The demons have already been judged in their sin. They cannot be redeemed. You can be or have been. You were made in the image of God. You have freedom of choice. Resolve in your heart not to sin, submit yourself to God, resist the devil and he will flee.
