I don't support the draft; but it has less to do with my support of Bush, and more to do with the fact that I'm in the military already. Honestly; and I'm not trying to be rude *smirks*, but I don't want to have to deal with a bunch of whiny draftees that don't give two shits about our country. I don't want someone who basically had to be forced into military service, watching my back. The very thought makes me uneasy. Give me a whole bunch of people who take pride in themselves, our country and joined of their own free will and everything will be great. Give me a bunch of cowards who don't care about our country...and they might start falling victim to friendly fire.

I'm not a Bush supporter.
I do believe we sent our troops to Afghanistan & Iraq in numbers far too small to safely carry out their duties.
But I am against any military draft. I believe voluntary military service is the way to go. This country just needs to attract more & better people by offering better pay & benefits & doing a more professional job of recruiting.
The private "security contractors" our government uses in those countries don't seem to have a problem recruiting & they pay MUCH more to their employees. Why can't the government use some of the money earmarked for the contractors go to our service men & women????

Last time Rangel brought up the draft in Congress it got TWO votes, so no politician is for the draft.
As for the general public, people for the draft think it is a way to get at the children of rich kids. Of course, they are wrong. With Bill Clinton as a past example, evading the draft is no longer a public career-killer, and they will simply go overseas to study or find some other deferment.

For the last time.....
1) This year the US Army recruited (that is new off the street, not reup's) 85,000 people! Every service has met there yearly goals by september.
2) You force problem is due to High numbers of females in the Army( who by law are not infantry) And Those who are in infantry being used too much. So guys in under used MOS's Arty, Air defense, Armor, etc. Are being used to fill the gap. So of the 130, 000 troops in IRaq, only about 40% are reall trigger pullers. The rest are support ( engineers, Civil affiars, MP's, Maint).
3) Draftees suck. This is 2006 not 1945. We don't use mass numbers of guys with rifles. Besides, the primary threat in IRAQ is IED's, not guys with Rpg's and AK's. More men does not stop a car bomb. Also The military of today is more hi tech. It is a waste of money to bring in thousands, train them & then have them leave in less than 4 years. You also who flood the ranks with people who are unfit, or don't want to be there. Bad morale, Crime, Fights, drugies & other things would rise. And still not improve your manpower.
4) You would break the budget. Every added person costs money. Payroll, housing, medical, benifits, education, food. Those numbers are huge. Totalled, the avg. solider costs about $90,000.
5) THe military does not want it. Rangel has a political agenda, not a military one.
So leave the PS3 playing, pot smoking, Yahoo! Libs home. Uncle Sam does not want them.........

Right now, the volunteer military is working fine.
If the draft comes about like the DEMOCRATS want, then you would end up with juvenile halls being emptied into the military. If you think that a draft would make the "rich kids" serve, think again. Besides, who would be running the draft? Likely those who avoided it in the 60's and 70's.
Right now, contrary to the belief of some, the military is able to weed out those who would be potentially troublesome. The military has established high standards for recruits.
Besides, who would want to have to work with or supervise someone who didn't want to be in. If you have been on this site for very long, you will find posts by people scared to death that the draft may come about and that they will be tasked to serve their country.

The US Army is at the maximum limit allowed by law. The only way to increase the size of the Army would be for Congress to raise the maximum allowed size of the Army.
Every person drafted would force out a volunteer.
IMO we need about two more divisions on the active force and another one on the reserve side. These can be filled with volunteers. All it would take is permission from Congress.

I am in the military and I am against the draft. Think about it like this. Think about where you work. Now, imagine they went and took one hundred people right out of high school and forced them to come work with you. Would those people be happy? No, they wouldn't.
The military has changed since Vietnam. A draft will only cause a decline in troop morale, discipline issues and other problems. I do not want anyone serving under/with or above me, that does not want to be there.

1st, the majority of active generals, as well as the joints chief of staff, do not beleive that we are stretched thin. In fact, the commander on Iraq recently declined to add forces to Iraq, believing them unnecessary.
2nd, contrary to belief, when we went into Iraq, US troop levels in Afghanistan increased, not decreased.
3rd, re-enlistment is at an all time high. People are going back in after they get out, showing that morale for the lifestyle is high.
4th, a draft is not necessary. Our nation is not built on the ideaology of forced constription. We fought a war over conscription in our past, and that as an issue is settled.
5th, we have the manpower to fight our war, we just lack the political will to let the miliraty fight with the gloves off.

Because a draft army of unmotivated and unwilling young men is far less capable than a smaller army of motivated and willing young men.
There are far more problems in a draft army, and far less efficiency. Why would any sane military or political leader want to saddle the world's best army with the luggage weight of a bunch of whiny draftees?
It doesn't make any sense. And, thank God, there are plenty of young men and women who have a sense of duty, honor and service, as I did when I joined 25 years ago.
