It refers to Lott's wife who looked back yearningly on Sodom when being led to a more moral place and was turned into a pillar of salt by a wrathful God. You must put the devil behind you or risk the same consequence.

Superstitions about salt date back to biblical times when salt was a highly prized commodity as it was crucial in preserving food, even used in lieu of currency. So spilling salt was considered an almost sacrilegious offence and throwing salt over your shoulder at such a moment was, like blessing someone after they've sneezed, aimed to "keep the devil at bay". Depending on your interpretation, the salt is either intended to blind the devil so he can't witness your error, or keep him from sneaking up on you while you're cleaning up your mess. It's important to note that the superstition calls for the offender to throw salt over the left (or "sinistra" - sinister) shoulder ie the devil's side with your right hand (your "good" side).

In biblical times, salt was an expensive commodity. Spilling salt was almost a sacrilegious offence. The offender would throw salt over his/her left shoulder to ward off the devil .

Being native Appalachin, the only one I have ever heard is that if you discuss Satan--you call him near.

I think the use of salt and holy water is supposed to work on vampires . . . and Stephen King had a line that I thought was good. I think it is in Salem's Lot when someone grabs a cross to ward off the being. The vampire says something to the effect of it only works if you believe in what the cross stands for . . .

Christ used scriptures to buffer the temptations of Satan and to ward off his attack.

I personally believe that is a myth because the priest heard it from some one else, and that person heard it from some one else. He has not spoken to the devil or the evil spirits, to even know if they exist or to even know their characteristics. Just like the game telephone things are past on from person to person and at the end the answer is never as it was when it begun.

It sounds really funky to me too! I did a little research and learned something. Among other things:

Salt has played a vital part in religious ritual in many cultures, symbolizing immutable, incorruptible purity. There are more than 30 references to salt in the Bible, using expressions like "salt of the earth." And there are many other literary and religious references to salt, including use of salt on altars representing purity, and use of "holy salt" by the Unification Church.

For some reason, salt "burns" demons, so flinging salt over your left shoulder gets into Satan's eyes and burns him, thus removing the evil from you for a bit

It is mainly a Catholic or one of the other similar religion practice. I believe it is derived from the belief in demons, especially those in water (i.e. driving them off = holy water). In the old days, they believed the demons would sit on the water, and anyone who touched it would be struck with blindness.

I think you should switch to another church...just an after thought

These are all rituals, which the devil could care less about. If you want to get rid of him, Quote the Word of God to him and he will flee from you. As long as Jesus is Lord of your life the devil has no power over you

I believe the only thing Satan is afraid of is Jesus and His followers who take their God given authority over him (the devil).
