It's fist fighting with gloves on. Bouts are divided into rounds. The number of rounds depends on the type of fight (pro or amateur). No hitting below the belt, no hitting when someone is down, no kicking, no head butting. Can be won by scoring of the judges (they decide who wins each round, the one who wins the most rounds wins) or by knockout (which means that a person is hit so hard that they don't return to the fight within the count of the referee). In some ways it is one of the purest sports but in other ways it much more regulated than other sports (state commissions, licenses required to participate, doctors can stop a fight, etc).

The first rule of boxing is to defend yourself at all times:) But on a serious note it is a contest where two fighters who are gloved with mits are allowed to punch and block each other puches above the belt-line. Scoring is usually done on a ten point must system where the winner of the round gets 10 points and the loser of the round gets 9 or less points. A knockdown is worth a point in prizefighting. If no knockdowns the score of the round is 10-9, with a knockdown, 10-8 for example. A knockout which is where one opponent is down for 10 seconds is an automatic win. A Technical knockout is when the referee or the corner stop the fight so the beaten fighter takes no more damage. I'd explain more but it might take a book to go ove every rule.

Boxing is tame now compared to 100 years ago. Boxing has many safety rules to help them go the 12 rounds with little injuries.

Boxing's rule is that Don King rules it. If you want to get into boxing, sign with Don King, which means signing your life over to him, and he'll tell you everything you need to know, or at least everything he wants you to know.
