Well, the answer to this question is both YES and NO.
So yes, the Chinese celebrate Christmas. But no, most do not celebrate it for the same reasons that Christians do.

If you walked around a major Chinese city 20 years ago, you probably wouldn't have seen many signs of Christmas. This is because Christmas is a Christian holiday and not many Chinese people are Christian. However, if you were to visit those same Chinese cities today, you'd see signs of Christmas everywhere you looked! On the Avenue of Eternal Peace in Beijing, China, there are Christmas displays everywhere. Many Chinese people celebrate by decorating their houses with Christmas trees, cooking and eating special foods, and spending time with family and friends.

Christians in China celebrate by lighting their houses with beautiful paper lanterns and decorating their Christmas trees, which they call "Trees of Light," with paper chains, paper flowers, and paper lanterns. Chinese Children hang muslin stockings and await a visit from Santa Claus, whom they call Dun Che Lao Ren (dwyn-chuh-lau-oh-run) which means "Christmas Old Man.".

Since the vast majority of the Chinese people are not Christian, the main winter festival in China the Chinese New Year which takes place toward the end of January. Now officially called the "Spring Festival," it is a time when children receive new clothing, eat luxurious meals, receive new toys, and enjoy firecracker displays. An important aspect of the New Year celebration is the worship of ancestors. Portraits and paintings of ancestors are brought out and hung in the main room of the home.

Chinese people do not actually celebrate christmas as this is a western christian holiday. As you must know chinese people are generally not of christian religion. BUT...it is becoming more popular as is Christmas and so many other things western. With the younger generation there are more people celebrating, decoratinfg exchanging gifts and many corporate markets can also gain from this new found holiday, so yes many big time shops are decorated and there are a few celebrations, but very few, ALTHOUGH, Hong Kong s celebration of Christmas seems to be much more similiar to the western idea.

Dec 25. But you'll only find celebrations and other Christmas-stuff going on in the bigger cities. The smaller cities and villages do not celebrate Christmas because it's more a "foreigner" holiday. Chinese, however, will spend more effort on the dinner on Dec 23, the celebration of "the first day of winter". According to my mom, this dinner rivals that of the Chinese New Year's Eve dinner.

As others have pointed out Christmas is popular in China now, but as most Chinese are not Christians, it's more of a novelty. Similar to non-Irish Americans who celebrate St. Patrick's Day. And yes, they know who Jesus Christ is and understand the meaning... contrary to what the poster above me has said.

Big cities like Shanghai & Shenzhen looks same as other Western cities. Christmas in China is mainly used for marketing tool for sales. I don't think many people understand the real meaning.

It's pretty well like nothing happened. It is a normal work day.
The only aspects of Christmas are purely commercial, in some of the larger department stores.

Christmas in China is called "Santa Claus Day". We all - including myself, dammit - have to work. Its significance is roughly equivalent to President's Day in the States.
