The words "types and shadows" are often used to describe various objects, events, rituals or even people in the Old Testament that point to a greater reality fulfilled in the the New Testament, primarily in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ himself.
There are many. Some of them are debatable. Others are declared to be a type or a shadow by the New Testament writers themselves.
A couple of easy examples:
Noah and the ark. A type of Christ and the "ark of salvation" He offers.
The OT Passover Lamb : a type of the true Lamb of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, who was to come
Melchizedek in the book of Genesis : A foreshadowing of the priesthood of the Lord Jesus Christ (according to the writer of Hebrews)
The bronze serpent Moses erected in the wilderness: A type of Jesus Christ being lifted up upon the cross.
Many many others

The Old Testament is full of hundreds of "pictures" or "prophecies" designed to help us recognize and understand who Jesus was and would he would do by his life, death and resurrection.
For example, the Passover Lamb was a type of Jesus Christ, who would give his life to save people.
Just as the Lamb was to be tested and found perfect before its scarifice, so Jesus was tested by the Jewish's leaders questions and found perfect.
Just as the Lamb was to have none of its bones broken, so Jesus did not have his bones (legs) broken on the cross.
Or how God after he had finished his work of creation, rested on the seventh day and made it into the Sabbath. So Jesus, after he had completed his work of redemption, rest on the seventh day in the tomb before his resurrection on the first day of the week.
Read through the book of Hebrews sometime. How Jesus fulfilled the "types" and "shadows" of the Old Testament is one of the major themes of that book. Also, reread Matther and make a list of how many times Matthew states that Jesus did something to fulfill an Old Testament "prophecy". (Your list should have 90 items on it when done).

Like the earthly sanctuary was a shadow of the original one in Heaven. Also, the story is a shadow of Jesus Christ story in the NT, etc.
