By depressions (a hallow place on a surface; Cassell Compact dictionary) I mean the small deepened circles not emotional depressions.

2 reasons:

1) They create a rougher surface that allows the grooves on a club to impart backspin on the ball better than if the ball was smooth.

2) Once airborne and spinning, they serve to increase lift and reduce drag, which generates longer shots compared to a smooth ball.

The dimples in a golf ball are designed to give the ball lift. As it flies through the air, the backspin imparted on the ball, combined with the effect of the dimples causes the ball to fly higher, allowing it to travel further.

This is why a golf ball's trajectory generally isnt a perfect rainbow shape and also why the clubs which go the furthest are set at 9 or 10 degrees of loft, whereas you would expect them to be at 45 degrees, which is the optimal angle for throwing something.

The "dimples" in a golf ball create air turbulance as the ball travels through the air. This allows the ball to travel further. Depending on the manufacturer, there are somewhere between 350 and 420 dimples on a golf ball.

Do you mean the depressions that the player have when they play bad?

The dimples in the ball help give it lift.

allows it to 'fly' farther than if it was smooth like a ping pong ball - cuts down on 'drag'
