If the site gave a number....AND if you checked that sellers feedback and it was all good, then it should be ok. The rule is, if you call a firm and do business...you're usually safe to give your number to complete a transaction...if they call you and want a card number, no way!

Yeah it is. Most of us are used to using paypal along with e-bay but paypal charge the seller for all credit card transactions (I can't remember how much - if you really want to know look in help on paypal). Sounds as if this seller is setup to like a shop with credit card facilities themselves and can therefore take credit card payment directly and avoid the paypal charges.
I can understand why you are concerned - if the goods you are buying are more than £100 then paying by credit card gives you protection. If they are less than £100 and you are still concerned contact the seller directly and/or always worth checking the sellers e-bay feedback, first, to see if there are any comments about this - hopefully positive ones that will make you feel better.
If you got a phone number then might be worth checking to see if the seller is listed as a business in the yellow pages (yell.com or bt.co.uk).
Chances are this will be fine but I too would be a little more cautious than your Mum seems to have been.
Hope you receive your goods soon and are happy with your purchase.

I would say it is necessary to give a credit card # over the phone, especially when you are making a phone order from a catalog sales company.
The alternative would be to fill out an order form and mail it in with a check. That could take a while. I recently ordered a computer part from Dell. The order was called in on a Monday morning. The package was delivered on Wednesday afternoon. I never expected it that fast.
