Dramatic bunkering typical of Nelson and Haworth designs strategy will add to the visual concepts of the golf course. These bunkers will be used to frame certain holes in order to provide challenge, making the golfer think, and also, in certain locations assist the golfer so that there golf balls do not kick into the lake or quarry.

Water has been used throughout the golf course to create aesthetic beauty and for irrigation purposes. All the lakes are connected, allowing for the water to constantly circulate, ensure excellent water quality. Many of the golf holes either play along the existing canal, around manmade lakes or over the spectacular 50-meter deep quarry, a unique feature of Shanghai Sheshan Golf Club. In addition to the lakes, Nelson & Haworth have incorporated scenic landscaped streams to add to the mountain forest landscape image. These streams will be circulated by a transfer pump system to ensure great water quality and moving water at all times.

The most unique feature of Sheshan Golf Course is the dramatic and intimidating quarry. Two holes, 16 and 17 play around and over the quarry, giving the golfer both an awe inspiring view while requiring great golf shots. These two holes will not only be the signature holes of Shanghai Sheshan Golf Club, but also of the whole Shanghai region.
