Best software for doing what? Do you mean best virus scanner?

Any virus scanner will slow your computer some, because a virus scanner checks every file you use for viruses before open it, saving it, etc. So it takes longer to do each of these task. But the difference in speed is often in microseconds (that is 1/1000th of a second). So what speed you sacrifice is more than worth it to prevent the destruction that one single virus can cause.

McAfee is no better and no worst "speed' wise that any of the other virus scanners on the market. So I would not make that a factor in selecting what virus scanner to use.
