A decade ago to learn English, you had to attend costly English classes or purchase course material like tapes and books. Now you can learn English for free from the comfort of your home using the Internet. The BBC and the British Council offer a number of on line courses, which teach written and spoken English. You can also improve your English by watching television programs and reading English newspapers. For more information, visit http://tinyurl.com/qnzpt

It appears you are not alone here...The quality of English here is terrible. Try watching some English TV, particularly news programmes. As much as I am proud of having Indian heritage, I feel so fortunate to have had a proper, English education. Good luck...

I was very bad in English.. grammar was very poor..
I don't even know whether to use 'was' or 'is' in a particular context.
First I got the grammar right, with the help of a friend.
She asked me to talk only in english. And she corrected me each and every time.It took nearly six months.
Next, I started to watch english movies. Atleast One movie, a day. My english got improved a lot.
What you need now is a understanding friend, with whom you can converse everything in english. He/she should be good in english, and would be able to correct you.

You must practise.
Find people with same interest and start a group. Meet once or twice a week, and just talk about some thing, pick a topic for next meeting to be prepare to talk about it. Collect a contribution to find a mentor, and agree to pay at least his/her travel expenses.
British or American embassy may have such groups already, with mentors.
