In the female dog, the first estrus cycle appears around 7 or 8 months of age, and is characterized by a vaginal blood flow which can last for about 10 to 12 days and is followed by ovulation (fertile period). This cycle repeats every six months -- the regularity starts to disappear when the female dog is around 9 or 10 years old. If you don't want your female dog to ever procreate, it is advisable to sterilize her before she has her first heat, as this way the risk or probability of future mammary tumors is almost null.

Friendly Hello,

Most dogs cycle around 6-9 months of age. You do not want to attempt to breed your dog the first heat cycle if this is what you are thinking. You should clear with your vet to make sure she is developed enough to breed but not before she has her 2nd heat cycle. Sometimes the first heat cycle is silent and you just dont notice any thing.

A dog of any breed can come in heat any time from 5 months old on. 6 Months is the average age. It is a wise idea to get them spayed before they have theri first heat since it dramaticly reduces the risk of mammary cancer.

My father used to breed and race huskies for the Diderot, most huskies will go into season between six months to eleven moths old. If your female has distinct trademarks, you will want to wait until her second or third season before breeding in order to pass those trademarks on. The more seasoned the dog, the easier her traits will be to duplicate in the litter.

6 months sounds about right, but remeber it is differant for every dog, just as it is for every human, some mature faster than others.

I wouldn't breed off her at that age though as she is still only young.
