I am so very very sorry. It may help you to know that you went way beyond what a lot of pet owners would have done for your cat. He KNEW you loved him and that is important. He had 11 years of a happy life, well loved and well cared for. Consider that many cats may live a longer life but in abject misery starving and uncared for. When your grieving process is over, what could be a better memorial to him to take an unfortunate cat from a rescue centre and give it all of the love that your lovely boy left behind in your heart.
Don't do it now though. Allow yourself to grieve for him and remember him and all the happy times you both had. When the time is right, you will know it.
I lost a beloved dog in February this year and grieved for 9 months until only a week ago. I spent one day with a strong feeling that my boy was close to me. That very evening, a friend in rescue told me of another border collie who had had a bad start and ended up in her rescue kennels, bone thin, terriefied after having been dumped from a car. I went to visit her and fell in love with my new boy immediately. I really really believe that 'Kip' had sent him to me to help me. Kip knew that I loved him and I know he loved me. I know he would have been very distressed at my crying daily for him. He sent my 'Moss' to me. I know it and nobody will ever convince me otherwise.
Grieve for your friend. Cry buckets, and I am sure that when the time is right, he will put in your path, a cat who needs the love and care that you showed to him.

I am so sorry but at least you know that Baggy isn't suffering any more. Concentrate on the good times that you shared. You wrote so movingly about him yesterday - why don't you write about him & about how you feel & share your thoughts & recollections with like-minded people? You might find it helpful & theraputic. You might also like to consider making a donation to a local animal charity or shelter in Baggy's name. That would be a tangiable way of remembering him. You are obviously a caring person, so I hope that some time in the future, when you have had time to grieve, you will feel able to give another cat a corner of your heart & home. There will always be cats who need someone like you.
Best wishes.

What was Baggy ? Dog or cat ? In any event the loss is tremendous and the house will feel empty for months. I am so sorry for you both. I had to have a rabbit (Daisy aged 12) put to sleep and I sat outside the Vet practice and cried my eyes out. Various pet owners came up to the car and patted the window and said sorry, which caused more sorrow, but how lovely of them all to express their sadness for me when a pet had to be relieved of pain. Pity we cannot do the same for humans.

You did the right thing, even though it was probably the hardest thing you've ever had to do. This was the final act of love you could do for your precious Baggy.
Maybe now is not exactly the right time, but sometime soon you should consider getting another cat. NOT as a replacement, but if you have another furry life to care for, it will focus your attention away from feeling down and lonely. Baggy will live on forever, but you seem like you have a lot of love to give and there are lots of cats out there in need of that.
Good luck, it will get easier believe me, it will just take time.

I'm so sorry to hear your bad news, but good news for your cat. He is not suffering any more, pain free what a relief for him? Your house will feel empty, but in time you may feel the need to get another cat, but not to replace Baggy, because nothing ever will! God bless, you are in our thoughts and pray's and of course Baggy.

hi, hard thing to go through. lost my beloved cat three years ago and it hurt. I live in the country and not long after that a kitten showed up at the door. at first I wanted nothing to do with him because the pain was still there. I started to feed him and to make a long story short , Itchy is very much part of my life and we are best friends. sleeps at the foot of bed every nite. I'm sure you will find a nice kitten that needs a good person like you to become friends with. the one you lost can never be replaced but lives on in your fond memory's.

You did do the right thing. Sometimes it is kinder to make the decision to put them to sleep than to let them live and suffer. Baggy would be grateful, I am sure. Rest in peace, Baggy, have fun at the Rainbow Bridge.

I know how you feel. My German Shephard had to be put to sleep last week. He had a degnerative disease only bred into the breed. It truly is devastating. I'm still crying. We miss our beautiful big boy so much. He was a rescue dog who didn't make the grade for Merseyside Police. We had him for eight wonderful years. You'll miss Baggy forever - nothing will change that and nor should it. Chin up.

You did the right thing, the vet wouldn't have recommended it if there was any chance of a cure or a good quality of life. Just rest assured that if it were a human that was so ill then they would have to suffer for a very long time, at least with our animals we can be kind and end it before it gets far to unbearable.
