Put him to bed. When he gets back up put him back to bed. Be firm. You are the parent, remember that. You are going to get screaming and crying and lots of resistance. It will be bad the first night. The second too. Over a period of a week or two it will get better until he learns.
Our doctor gave me the same advice and when my wife asked about all the crying he said it would be good for him. Clears the phlem from the lungs and strengthens the muscles.
Its a common mistake that I think all parents make. They let the kids get away with things when they are very little. As the kid gets older these cute tricks become serious annoyances or even dangerous for the kids. Be firm now and it will make a huge difference later.

I know it might sound mean, but I had this problem with my daughter at an earlier age. But put them him in his room, with a stuffed animal and let him just fuss. He's use to you laying with him and feels secure, which is normal for kids. But keep putting him in there, and as much as it may break your heart, he's got to realize hes a big boy.
You could also do a chart and set it up for when he sleeps in his bed all week he gets a special treat. Yea I know bribing isn't the answer, but it works sometimes. Do special things like that, show him he is a big boy and he can sleep in his own bed.
I hope that works. Good Luck. I saw that on Super Nanny

I lay with my 4 year old daughter until she falls asleep. I hate the puritanical expectations we put on little ones. In many cultures the whole family sleeps close together. They are so little and afraid of the dark etc. I could not imagine leaving my daughter alone in a room, even with a night light on, never did it.
She is a very happy, outgoing, and independent child, so I know it is not hurting her. We read a book then I rub her back and sing to her and lay with her until I am sure she falls asleep. It is often the best part of a busy day.

Hi I had the same issue with my daughter except she was two at the time. I used a reward chart and it worked wonders. I made the whole experience fun for my daughter and she had a reward to look forward to at the end of it all. Sometimes a year and a half later she will go through a phase of constantly getting up and I simply use the chart again. It does take perseverance but you can do it!

Don't worry about it right now he is only 4. Enjoy this time with him cause when he starts liking girls u are going 2 wish he gave u this much attention .u must be a good mom and he really loves u .keep up the good work with your son so many parents are not connected with their children today. I wish my dad was close to me when i was young. All i really have is my mom and we are very close. She is the best mom ever and your son will feel the same way about you.

This could be a habit since the very tender age that you have done with your 4-year kid. Try to give him something to play so that he could learn to forget you when especially going to bed. Remember not to give confectionary or you will be even in bigger trouble.

All children want to sleep with their mother only. Even my 21 year
girl still likes to sleep with her mother.

a child loves the warmth from a mothers body, and to hear the soothing sound of a mothers heartbeat. this is a part of motherhood. once your child is more independent, he will start to detach a little more.
