I wasn't able to go to my apartment for a week. I checked my pantry and my pasta & rice grain bins (which are airtight) right before I was about to cook dinner. I noticed a few ant-sized insects crawling around. Disgusting. Anyone know what they are and how do I get rid of them? Can I still use my ingredients? Thanks and happy thanksgiving!

wievel is what it sounds like and I personally would not use the food, I would throw it away. To keep wievel out of food, try putting some bay leaf in the containers and on the shelves around the food. It works for me.

Trace amounts of insect material are going to find their way into our food no matter what methods of production and storage are used. Although most people don't intentionally eat insects they probably have consumed over a pound of insects in a year.
Ground insect particles are in food items such as strawberry jams, peanut butter, spaghetti sauce, applesauce and frozen chopped broccoli.

Stored-product moths attack flour, pasta and dried fruit. A constant threat to stored whole grains are grain beetles, weevils and other insect pests. They can be milled along with the grain. Almost everyone has at least one time opened a box of cake mix or cornmeal to discover flour beetles have infested the contents. We throw away the products that we see are infested. Just think how many we consume, because we didn't notice they were infested. Ingesting insect material may cause stomach disorders, as well as allergic reactions.

It's probably the maggots which developed...Did you check whether the container was clean enough before you stocked it..or maybe even the product got expired...or must be the pet which when entered the kitchen must have dropped something in there which brought out the unwanted visitors.Nay..don't use the stuff...

I wouldn't use the affected ingredients. The thought that maybe I didn't get them all out would make me ill. I don't think you really get them all out without discarding the contaminated product.

My Mother always called them meal bugs. They probably wouldn't hurt you but I couldn't eat it if they're in there.
