How about just having a dog that doesn't shed clipped regularly instead of getting a short fur dog?
dogbreedinfo.com is a great site for researching breeds.
And of course, akc.org
Get a rescue dog or a dog from the breeder.
Don't even walk into a pet store. You might end up getting suckered in. They charge nearly as much as a breeder (and charge high prices for mutts and purebreds that don't meet breed standards), and even though they tell you they get their dogs from USDA-regulated breeders, they don't tell you whether those breeders have violated those regulations. I don't even think they know!
Also, most likely some potty training work has been done on a dog from a breeder.
Good luck!
Dogbreedinfo.com has a quiz to help you figure out what dog is right for you.

As someone else suggested, petfinder is great, but also use the akc if you are interested in going to a breeder. The akc will refer you to the club for your chosen breed, and the club for your chosen breed can supply breeder referrals. The club usually has a checklist you can use when dealing with breeders.
BTW, I think it's scary to have a dog shipped. Be willing to go pick up the dog wherever you get it from.

Depends which country you are in. Australian Silky Terriers, are the most lovable, friendly, playful, obedient dogs . They have long hair but it doesnt moult.(meaning the hair never comes out and leaves a mess on clothes , chairs etc., good for those with hay fever for this reason., They live to a good age 12yrs and up.Bitches are more loyal than dogs in any breed, and get em de-sexed if you dont want to breed from which ever dog you eventually choose. It sure helps their temperament.

Min Pins!!!! My girl is 10 lbs, has short fur, and is a complete cuddle bug. When I researched the breed, many sites said they were not lap dogs . . boy were they wrong! I did ask several breeders what they thought of that and all said that theirs were total lap dogs. Don't get me wrong, she's got tons of energy, but after play time - her favorite thing is to just be held. You can also litter train them, which is a plus.

Can't go past a staffy (staffordshire terrier) they are very loyal, great with kids, easy to feed, and love/thrive on attention from everyone. The only problem is they have a bit of a bad reputation, but you have to remember that every breed has the ability to be 'dangerous', it's the way they are raised! I've had my staffy for nearly 5 years, and I couldn't imagine having any other kind of dog. He's a bit of a dumbarse, but we all love him dearly!

Some people won't like my answer, but it's chihuahua. I have five of them. You'd be looking for a single coat, short hair. Of course with such a coat, they do tend to get chilled and benefit from a sweater. I have had chis for 9 years and my kids are 10 and 12.
Look for a bigger chi (at least 6 pounds) and one that has been raised in a home with exposure to kids. They are little love bugs

I would suggest a few different breeds:
Lagotto Romagnolo (short but dense fur; needs to be combed often and trimmed twice per year - does NOT shed)
Dachshund
Miniature Labradoodle (can have short or medium length fur depending if it takes over more Poodle or more Labrador)
Chinese Hairless Crested
Shih-Tzu
Mexican Hairless

i'd say a fox terrier, they're small and friendly. they have short fur and don't shed too much. kids would love to play with them. i have 2. the one is super affectionate (constantly licking and wanting to be petted) and the other loves chasing tennis balls (or anything you throw for that matter)

Go to the shelter, pick out some pups with the appearance you desire, then spend time with them until you bond with one! They have many dogs who can become part of a loving home.

Please consider the local animal shelter. There are so many adorable dogs that for one reason or another have ended up homeless. They make excellent pets and you save their lives when you adopt them.
