It is valid with certain conditions that must be maintained with no exceptions. It is a certificate that identifies the aircraft as being built to a design standard that is considered fit and safe.
The aircraft must be safe and fit in all aspects for flight, which means,
Weight & Balance
Proper load distribution,
Emergency equipment,
Compliance with all Airworthiness directives,
Aircraft maintenace procedures,
Maintenace releases in the Journey log, up to date,
Certificate of Airworthiness
Liability Insurance,
Journey Log,
And a lot of other paperwork that is current.
If any of the procedures are missing, the Airworthiness Certificate is invalid.
Don't leave home without them.

An airworthiness certificate means the aircraft is in a condition for safe operation and is maintained in accordance to FAA regulations. Basicly means the aircraft is safe to fly. You must have the airworthiness certificate in the aircraft when you are operating it, in case you get ramp checked.
For more detailed information go to http://www.faa.gov/

fci-pitch hit them all except one.
The aircraft must be operated in accordance with the required placards and markings and the FAA approved Pilot Operating Handbook.
So if you exceed the never exceed speed (Vne) or extend the flaps higher than Vfe or decide to perform a loop in a Normal Category aircraft, the C of A is invalid. In all overspeed and over stress circumstances, an inspection is required prior to further flights.

It means that the aircraft is flight worthy according to rules established by the FAA. If you mess with those guys you're in a world of hurt.
