I heard this, but am unsure. If you're going to come on here and tell me how I should enlist to serve my coutry, for pride, etc. then please just save your time. I am enlisting because I have wanted to since I was very, very young. I'm doing it because it is something I can be proud of, and I want to give back to my country. However, in the real world (where I reside) there are in fact bills to pay, and that is why I'm wondering. Thank you.

Well, here is your answer… The only program that offers a LUMP sum bonus with the Navy Reserve falls under the Non-Prior Service Basic Program. Under this program if you select a job (rate) that you qualified for and is a critical fill job (i.e. construction jobs with the Seabees / Medical) you may be offered a lump sum bonus between $10,000 to $20,000. This bonus is paid upon completion of ‘A’ school and is tax deductible. You sound like you have a strong desire to serve the Navy and your country. I commend you on your decision and wish you well. Be advised that USNR pays the bonus and that if you should decide to go active under a USN contract during the first six years, your bonus will be recouped. (This does not include any time you spend on active duty as a reservist (i.e., your 2-week annual training, or any other volunteered mobilization). Ask your job counselor at MEPS to review your enlistment annex with you. This will have all the detail of the bonus contract spelled out.

YES if you are in the navy it is paid in one lump sum after you complete your initial training(boot camp and "A" school). It will be on your contract agreements/guarentees when you go to MEPS to sign up. Be careful about joining. The military is a great thing but most people enter with the wrong idea in their head. I was fogged by the vision of my $20K bonus and associates degree and i didn't see what you really have to deal with. I am very proud to serve my country as a 3rd Class in the US NAVY but it is a very restricted lifestyle and all of your training will be very vigorous and challenging so i say if you question it at all then talk to as many people in the service as you can. If you have any further questions please email me. I would love to help you any way possible.

I enlisted Army Guard and my bonus was not lump sum. There should be a page especially for your bonus in your enlistment packet...read it thorougly. Usually enlistment bonuses are not lump sum, but re-enlistment bonuses can be. You should have to initial by the sums that you will be receiving and the stage in your enlistment period in which you will be receiving them. That should tell you.

depends. if it is under $20,000 it will be paid in one lump sum upon the completion of A school. if it is more than that, half will be paid upon the completeion, and the rest divvied up in equal installments over the life or your contract.

just don't forget to factor in about 27-28% will taken off the top for taxes.

Good for you! I would get with my recruiter and get everything in writing double and triple. There is a lot of red tape. Not to mention depending on what you are going to be doing or prior service you might not be entitled to a bonus. Not everyone gets them.
Good Luck!
