Well, I would recommend the train. It is a beautiful and scenic trip and if you have kids, they can sleep, eat, play without worries.

First you would take the train from Sorrento to Naples. This is called the "Circumvesuviana". You can check it out at http://www.vesuviana.it/infoeng.htm.
You will arrive in Naples at the train station called Napoli Terminale, where from there you can take the train to Rome. I also suggest you take the "Euro Star" train. It is an excellent service and it will take you only a couple of hours to reach the beautiful and eternal city of Roma.
