You set them on the charcoal disks and the charcoal burns slowly, which melts the incense. You need to make sure the charcoal disk is on something that won't burn our heat up. I have a small brass cauldron on my altar that I use for burning loose incense, and I have it filled with dirt to help keep the heat from transferring to the cauldron and scorching my altar table. You can also use sand.

Blessed be!
