Washing your hands doesn't work. Rub them on the metal faucet for a bit. Then your hands end up smelling like metal instead. Which would you prefer, metal or onions? You can wash the metallic smell off with soap. To avoid ending up with onion smelling hands: *immediately wash your hands after onion contact *handle the onions as quickly as possible to avoid as much contact as possible *wear gloves when handling onions

The methods suggested so far all sound good, but here's one more. Make a solution of lemon juice or cut a lemon and rub it on your hands.
The citric acid should take away the onion smell. You will want to wash with soap and water afterwards and don't try to eat the lemon!!

Wash your hands with some liquid dish detergent then wash your hands with toothpaste. It realy does help take the onion scent off the skin.

Wash them in tomato juice. Or diced tomatoes. It really, really works!
Back in the old days the perms for your hair would stink to high heaven. Washing your hair in tomato juice would neutralize that smell also.
Of course, wash with soap and water after using the tomato juice. LOL

I can vouch for the stainless steel treatment -- wash your hands first, then rub them over the stainless steel sink/faucet, or a cool stainless steel pot. (-: The stainless steel won't smell, either.
