Can you be optimistic about not being pessimistic? Isn't that, like, a triple negative?

To be honest, pessimism is a feeling. You feel hot, you feel hungry, you feel pessimistic. It isn't any more real than any other feeling that you have. It just takes a little discipline to not give into it.

Many of us tend to latch onto the worst-case scenario in a given situation, but we rarely realize that it takes an extreme set of circumstances for the worst-case scenario to happen, so we get caught up in that scenario, and obsess about it. In most cases, we are best served by just letting the worst-case scenario go, as it will probably never happen.

Of course, there's probably some wisdom behind the idea of planning for the worst - as the saying goes, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

I love being a pessimist, that way I'm never disappointed. Being a pessimist has helped me through a real bad break up once

It's a tough habit to break. How about paying attention and engaging yourself in things that you're enthusiastic about, for practice? And when you hear yourself think pessimistic thoughts, suggest to yourself that you excercise the option of looking at the situation optimistically as well. You don't have to give up the pessimism right away, just start showing yourself you have alternatives.

i also had this trouble and i realized that i was a pessimistic. my friends constantly pointed it out to me as well. Perhaps u are constantly down grading urself and never complimenting or accepting any compliments about u. this may be because u want reassurance and people to keep saying that "you're not that bad" or wateva, this i've been told is fishing for compliments. just accept urself and love what u do and who u are. also, learn to trust others and their opinions. i have, and the world looks alot brighter

WEll obviously it isnt going to be easy but you gotta start at the beginning...so automatically your gonna think bad stuff about the situation...so the first thing that comes to your mind you shuld try adn think of a better thing... so just say you want tickets for a show.l.you will think omg there will be one left when i ring, then say oh there will be heaps of seats left, I wont loose anything for ringing and seeing any way. it mite take a bit of time but if you just keep doing it, it should come automatically soon.

Try to look on the positive side of things. Another suggestion would be to ask for help when something is too difficult for you to handle.
